Support Forum

Hi,

Joomla! 4.4.4 Joomla! 5.0 will be relased in two days, as you can see here.

In particular, I read this

Joomla! 4.4

In preparation for Joomla! 5.x, Joomla! 4.4 is primarily a release containing backports of API changes from the 5.x to help ease the transition to the next major release for the community.
Schedule
Development Status
Current Release 4.4.0-beta3
Upcoming Release 4.4.0
Release Date of Series 17 October 2023
End of Support for 4.x 17 October 2025
Note: The schedule for upcoming releases is subject to change depending on the availability of volunteers and circumstances beyond our control.
Release Manager

The release leads for Joomla! 4.4 are Allon Moritz & Martin Kopp.
Main Features

The following are the primary features introduced to Joomla! 4.4.0.

Joomla! 5 compatibility layer/Plugin
Joomla! Pre Upgrade checker

Proposed Features

This release does not accept any more features at this point other than intended for the pre upgrade checker and backports of 5.x features to improve compatibility.
Pull Requests Requiring Documentation

Some pull requests are merged before the documentation is written, a list of those pull requests can be found on GitHub. Each new feature should be documented on the documentation wiki by the developers involved to provide all information to users as well as helping 3rd party developers to integrate a feature to their extensions. Each page should have the following code inserted at the end: [[Category:Joomla! 4.x]] where the x is replaced with the version.2.9
Documentation Help Screens

The documentation help screens are based on a full major release series. As such, all of the help screens will require updates for Joomla! 4.0. In addition to the required updates, there is an idea proposal for a potential GSoC project to work on a new system to manage the screenshots; even if the project does not happen as part of GSoC the effort will continue otherwise.
Joomla! 5.x

Joomla! 5.x is the next major release series of the CMS.
Development Status
Current Release 5.0.0-beta3
Upcoming Release 5.0.0
Release Date of Series 17 October 2023
End of Support for 5.x 19 October 2027
Release Manager

The release manager for Joomla! 5.x are Harald Leithner & Benjamin Trenkle.
Main Features

Schema.org Integration
Bootstrap 5.3
Codemirror 6.0
Tinymce 6.1

So, what we have to do? Can we update our websites, or we have to wait some time before update?

Thank you in advance for answers.

Hi Marco,

There is really no rush to update anything.
You can stay on v4.3.4 for as long as you want.
My advice is to do the following:

1. Wait until Gantry 5.5.17 is released and install it.
2. Wait until Joomla 5.0.1 or even 5.0.2 or 5.0.3 are released so some of the obvious bugs are fixed.
3. Only then update your website to Joomla 4.4.4 (which is a prerequisite for updating to Joomla 5).
4. Then update to Joomla 5.x

    Hi Marco,

All our products (both templates and particles) are fully compatible with Joomla 5 :)
But you cannot update yet, because you need to wait for Gantry v5.5.17 to be released (you will find more details here).

However, you can use the current Gantry Nightly Build, which works on Joomla 5 ;)

    Hi Ivo,

Firs of all, thank you for you reply.

Actually, I don't have time to test Nightly Build, I'm very sorry.

I don't have any urgence to upgrade from Joomla! 4x to Joomla! 5, so I will wait the official release of Gantry 5.5.17.

Now another question for you: it's necessary to update actual websites (based on Joomla! 4.3.4) on Joomla! 4.4.4 version (that probably will be realeased tomorrow) or, due that updates seem to be only preparatory to upgrade to Joomla! 5.0, it's better waiting for a version (for example) named Joomla! 4.3.5?

Thank you in advance for your answer.

    Hi Ivo,

I think that's the real and right way!

    Thank you very much, Ivo!

P.s. do you think that will be released Joomla! 4.3.5, 4.3.6 etc? I remember that were released Joomla! 3.10.x versions when a lot of Joomla!4 was already released?

Thank you in advance, your support is really great and precious.

    No problem, Marco.
Nope, I think that Joomla 4.4.x will be the last Joomla 4 version.
There might be some minor releases like Joomla 4.4.1, 4.4.2... but I do not think that there will be Joomla 4.5.x

    Hi Ivo,

I meant not 4.5.x but actual 4.3.4 to 4.3.x etc.

    The same thing with 3.10.x

But, as you can see, it's not an important thing. :D

Thank you very much again, Ivo.

    Hi Marco,

Yes, I understand what you mean :)

But it is not possible for the Joomla project to release more 4.3.x version when 4.4.x is released.
So if there is a fix that should go in Joomla 4, it will go in version 4.4.x

The same thing as with Joomla 3.
They released 3.10.x as a bridge between Joomla 3 and Joomla 4.
And all fixes that had to go to Joomla 3 were released under 3.10.x

Anyway, all this is totally not important.
If you want to stay on Joomla 4, you will be on 4.4.x.
But there is really not point to stay on Joomla 4, so sooner or later you will update to Joomla 5.

    Hi Ivo,

    Perfect, as usual.

So I will stay on Joomla! 4 until everything (in particular when Gantry 5.5.17 will be released) wil be ready and safe to migrate to Joomla! 5.

Thank you very much angain and again!

I have a only test webspace, a space when I can test everything (and make disasters :D ) without problems.

I installed Joomla 4.4.0 (in a test website based on Oxygen Template) and everything worked fine at first attempt.

After updating Joomla! to 4.4.0 version, I asked my hosting provider to switch MySql database version from 5.7.x to 8.x. They switched and now I have a database compatibile with Joomla! 5. This is a very important thing.

I suggest everyone to be sure to chek your version MySql database, because 5.7.x it's not compatibile with Joomla! 5

I hope that information coul be useful for everybody.

    Hello everyone.

As mentioned in a previous post, I have updated to version 5.x. Everything seems fine at first glance; I've only noticed minor display issues with Font Awesome, but nothing serious.

Now, I'd like to highlight a broader issue concerning IT products that affects J5 in general.

The native administration theme automatically adapts to the settings of the browser or the user's device (in my case, dark mode). I've observed that many elements of Gantry, including IT particles, don't properly adapt to dark mode. Please be aware that this issue could apply to any extension. Read this article.

It would be advisable to suggest to the Gantry developers to consider optimizing this graphical aspect to ensure better adaptability to dark mode. This could significantly enhance the user experience and make Gantry more versatile.

    Cheers
