Getting ready for Joomla 4

Hi Ivo & Everyone

I know we all realise that Joomla 4 is coming, and I have been discussing with clients about upgrading some of my older client’s websites which still use Gantry4 and some older Rocket theme templates. I had thought about bringing these up to Gantry 5 templates (Inspire Theme) to make the move easier to move to Joomla 4. However, I am now wondering if that would only be making more work for me.

I did believe Joomla 4 would be here by now, but it seems a few months off yet. Ivo you said your templates will be upgraded to be compatible with Joomla 4, so if I upgraded to Gantry5 templates would it make the work easier or do you think I am best to wait and see for a while after Joomla 4 goes live?

Just wondering what other web designers are thinking.

Regards
Lynda

    Hey Lynda,

Tags will soon be added to the Gantry 5 framework. You can find more details in this Pull Request.

And we will implement this functionality (fetching articles by Tag) shortly after ;)

    Hi Ivo

That is what I was starting to think also, no point doing a lot of work now and more when Joomla 4 comes into effect - clients will not pay twice for an upgrade.

A lot of my older websites used Roksprocket quite a bit. I have contacted Rockettheme and they will NOT be supporting this going forward. I know I can get the same effect now from Joomla Particles. However, the Joomla particles only support category and not Joomla Tags which is something I really found useful when Rockettheme introduced this into Roksprockdet. Do you think it could be possible have Tags in Joomla Particles or is this something quite complicated. I am no coder.

    Thanks
    Lynda

    Hi Lynda,

I did believe Joomla 4 would be here by now, but it seems a few months off yet.

Me too! I did believe that a stable version of Joomla 4 will be released in the beginning/mid of the Summer 2019.

Anyway, back to your question - you will be safe if you start switching to Gantry 5 templates because both we and Rockettheme will make our Gantry 5 templates Joomla 4 compatible.
But in my opinion the safest option is to wait until Joomla 4 is released (should be in 2-3 months, hopefully) and then start updating and switching the templates.

Actually, it doesn't really matter, but still, I would wait for Joomla 4 :)
